VCU Symphony

The VCU Symphony is the premiere orchestral ensemble at VCU. The Symphony performs a wide variety of repertoire, with a focus on full-scale orchestral works such as Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Brahms 1 and Dvořák’s “New World Symphony”, and regularly programs pieces by living composers. The orchestra offers three concerts each semester and collaborates with VCU Opera each spring on their fully staged opera production.

Performance highlights include presentations at the Virginia Music Educators Association conference and the Virginia Music Teacher’s Association conference; a recent collaborative performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Something Wonderful” with the Theater Department; providing orchestral accompaniment for VCU Opera’s award-winning full-staged productions of “Hansel and Gretel,” “The Old Maid and the Thief,” “The Gondoliers,” and “The Marriage of Figaro.”

The Symphony rehearses Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:30 – 2:50 p.m.

For more information, contact the director: Daniel Myssyk.

Auditions for the VCU Symphony or other string ensembles are open to all students, including music majors, music minors and non-majors, and take place during the first week of class each semester. Auditioning string students should sign up for a time using the posted sign-up link on this page. Winds, brass and percussion students wishing to audition for both the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the VCU Symphony may do so with one audition; they should contact Dr. Patrick Smith, psmith7@vcu.edu, coordinator of that area, for further instructions.
