David J. Greennagel has served as Director of Music Education at VCU since 2005. In this time, the Music Education curricula has been transformed to a vibrant, field-based experience for undergraduate majors, reflecting the most current and proven approaches for personal and peer mentoring for successful pre-professional development for future Music Educators.

Dr. Greennagel has been engaged in music education for over 35 years, teaching in elementary, middle, and high school settings in choral, general, guitar and music technology in Virginia and with the Department of Defense Schools in Germany and Japan. At the collegiate level, he has taught music education coursework, choral and wind/marching band. He served as Director of Choral Activities at Randolph-Macon College and Director of Music Education at Florida International University in Miami, as well as in appointments at James Madison University. Dr. Greennagel was the Supervisor of Arts Education for the Arlington, Virginia, Public Schools.

Dr. Greennagel is known as a student-centered, progressive music educator, with specializations in adolescent development and motivation, Creativity Education, innovative curriculum development and program building, and psychology of musical behavior.

Dr. Greennagel is the recipient of many awards for teaching, including the Thomas Branch Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has served as a Higgins Fellow, mentoring young faculty members. He has served as chair of the NAfME Council of State Editors, on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Music Educators Journal, the review board of the American Choral Directors Association Journal, and the Editorial Board of Research Perspectives in Music.
