Bonnie McCoy

Bonnie McCoy is the Administrative Director and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre with a background of many years of professional experience. She started at Theatre VCU as Adjunct Faculty, teaching costume design and stage makeup in 2007-2008, and became full time at VCU in 2010. Bonnie holds her MFA in Stage Design from Southern Methodist University and her BFA in Design and Technical Theatre from West Virginia University, where she studied both Scene Design and Costume Design.

Bonnie has worked professionally in New York and regionally on a wide range of projects, including work as an Associate Costume Designer for Toni-Leslie James.  Projects she has worked on include 7 Broadway shows, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with Whoopi Goldberg and Charles Dutton, King Hedley II with Brian Stokes Mitchell, Leslie Uggams, and Viola Davis, The Wild Party with Toni Collette, Mandy Patinkin, and Eartha Kitt,  Marie Christine with Audra McDonald, and the original Broadway production ofFootlooseShe has also worked for many Off-Broadway, regional and international theatre companies, dance, television, commercials, and film.

Theatre venues she has worked for either as an associate designer or designer include Lincoln Center Theater (including the original production of A New Brain with Malcolm Gets and Kristen Chenoweth), New York Shakespeare Festival including George C. Wolfe’s Macbeth with Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett and hisThe Tempest with Patrick Stewart, and Mary Zimmerman’s Henry VIII, Starring Ruben Santiago Hudson, Second Stage Theatre working with director Graciela Daniele on Little Fish with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 4 productions in the Encores! Series at New York City Center, Ballet Hispanico, Ford’s Theatre Washington D.C., Hartford Stage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, 2 productions for The Queen Elizabeth II that have traveled worldwide, The Chichester Theater Festival, and The Shakespeare Theatre among others.  Selected television credits include Whoopi starring Whoopi Goldberg, and Law and Order SVU (season 3).

Bonnie has also worked professionally as an artist and illustrator, including all new product development furniture sketches for Rowe furniture, artwork for various invitations, brochures, large scale artwork, including large paintings for the World Furniture Market, and a large underwater scene commissioned from The Fish Monger Restaurant, Fort Myers Beach FL and had a sketch for Clayton Marcus furniture published in the Feb, 2010 edition of Furniture Today.

She has also been a Guest Artist for Hollins University and Duke University, where she has done both Costume and Scenic Design, as well as worked with students on costume construction and scene painting workshops.   She is a member of United Scenic Artist Local 829.

Topics covered in classes at VCU include theatrical rendering techniques for both undergraduates and graduates, intro to scene design, intro to drawing, color theory, intro to costume design, stage makeup.  As Administrative Director for the Department of Theatre she is in charge of all fiscal administration, personnel administration, Director of Admissions, and scholarship coordinator, as well as many other facilities, community engagement, service and  departmental management duties.
